Trilium Health FAQ’s
What actually is a Naturopathic Physician?
Dr. Iverson describes Naturopathic Doctors (N.D.) as the highest
trained practitioners of their kind that utilize both conventional
and natural (alternative) healing modalities. Founded upon a
holistic philosophy, The Tenants of Naturopathic Medicine (bottom of
page) create the foundation for every doctor-patient interaction and
the basis by which the doctor treats.
After the candidate receives their undergraduate degree they may
apply for entry into one of six recognized Naturopathic Medical
Schools. The training begins with standard medical sciences such as
anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, immunology, and the conventional
clinical classes of physical diagnosis, lab diagnostics,
orthopedics, emergency medicine, pharmacology and minor surgery. In
addition to these standard medical classes, the naturopathic
education includes therapeutic nutrition, botanical medicine,
homeopathy, natural childbirth, classical Chinese medicine,
hydrotherapy, naturopathic manipulative therapy (“chiropractic-like”
adjustments), psychology, and counseling (to encourage people to
make lifestyle changes in support of their personal health). It has
similarities to the conventional M.D. education but also includes
holistic and nontoxic therapies with a strong emphasis on disease
prevention and optimizing personal wellness.
Concluding four years of course work and clinical education, a
naturopathic physician takes rigorous professional board exams so
that he or she may be licensed by a state and granted all the rights
and privileges of a practicing ND. This license allows the physician
to diagnose and treat disease, order lab work, and make professional
referrals. Naturopaths may write prescriptions for conventional
medicines and antibiotics, give pap smears, use IVs or injections,
and perform minor surgery.
Naturopaths are at the forefront of bridging the gap between
alternative and conventional treatments as they integrate the most
useful methods of each discipline. They are considered specialists
in health maintenance through prevention and natural therapeutics.
What is Dr. Iverson’s
Specialty?
He is a specialist in Nutritional Medicine, Botanical Medicine,
Detoxification and Fasting.
Dr. Iverson performs a very unique form of testing that he has been
doing since 1994 that helps determine a patient’s specific
biochemistry. With this test, which consists of urine and saliva
analyses (including pH, electrolyte levels, sugar levels, etc),
metabolic nutrition physical exam, iridology and tongue reading, and
a metabolic questionnaire help determine the most appropriate “fuel”
for the patient. This program may be anything from strict
vegetarianism, to a carnivorous ‘Atkins-like’ diet, to multiple
variations in-between depending on the patient’s personal chemistry-
no single diet is best for every person. Dr. Iverson has a
strong conviction to use food as the foundation of your medicine and
use additional supplements only when they are necessary to change
chemistry (this puts emphasis on a healthy lifestyle as opposed to
handfuls of supplements). He says, “Get to the Basics! Foundation is
Key! Put the wheels on the car first before we add bells, whistles,
and hood ornaments.”
Detoxification through Fasting and Hydrotherapy are proven to be one
of the most successful treatments for the Doctor over the years. His
internship at True North water-only fasting clinic and leading
numerous group and private fasts have imparted great understanding
in the body’s ability to heal itself by limiting food intake.
Hydrotherapy done before or after fasting has only shown to improve
results and quicken the body’s healing ability.
Because of his fond interest in plant medicine and furthering
education in medical herbology, Dr. Iverson uses plants as an
adjunct treatment to nutritional programs. He finds their use
especially applicable in organ detoxification and tonification of
body systems.
How is this testing
Performed?
Urine and saliva samples are collected in the office and evaluated
with the rest of the metabolic nutrition physical exam. The lab
values are then analyzed through equations and computer programs to
devise patients the most important food and nutritional elements to
bring the body into alignment. Dr. Iverson combines his knowledge of
iridology and tongue reading to create a complete analysis of how to
treat the patient. With this information, Dr. Iverson may choose to
focus either on building and nourishing the patient with foods and
specific supplements or cleanse and detoxify with plant medicine
depending on what the patient’s chemistry is most indicating. In
some cases the doctor may suggest that food allergy testing, heavy
metal testing, and various blood testing to determine other chemical
imbalances, hormone health, or cardiac health be performed.
What does the appointment
consist?
The first appointment consists of Biochemical Nutrition testing,
iridology, tongue reading, nutritional physical exam and
consultation; total time is about one hour. In 5 to 7 days after your intake, the patient will
return to receive the laboratory results and dietary recommendations
at which time the doctor will explain the specific imbalances and go
over the treatment plan. It takes about 30 -45 minutes depending on
the complexity of the situation. This appointment is always followed
by a brief courtesy follow-up phone call a week later to answer any
questions the patient may have.
The doctor will retest the body chemistry in 2-3 weeks from this
last appointment to see if any modifications are needed depending on
the patient’s current condition. This is a 45 minute visit and the
patient receives the results of the retest and their updated program
at the same visit.
From here patient’s chemistry is often well balanced and need to
return every 3-6 months as maintenance for retesting. Some may
choose to continue their health wellness by participating in the
extensive cleansing and detoxification programs TRILIUM offers.

What else does TRILIUM
offer?
Manipulations: in the style of old Osteopathic adjustments with
emphasis placed on muscular adjustments and mobilization through
stretching and strengthening tendons and ligaments along with
traditional bone adjustments. Organ visceral manipulation and
myofascial release are used for muscular spasm and abdominal
discomfort.
Colonic Hydrotherapy: introducing warm purified water into the colon
in a controlled environment with an experienced therapist allows the
body to relieve itself of waste matter that could otherwise remain
for extended periods in the colon and be reabsorbed. The goal is to
allow the body to release both stool and bile where the body has
accumulated fat soluble toxins that can dramatically affect a
patients overall health. Colonics are a part of a comprehensive
cleansing program that is incorporated with an herbal detoxification
program prescribed by Dr. Iverson. He usually suggests 3-4 back to
back during the bowel, liver and kidney cleanses and maintenance
cleansing 2-3 every few months.
Allergy testing, Heavy metal testing, Hormone testing: Inquire about

Massage: offered by an independent practitioner at our office
NATUROPATHIC TENANTS
PRIMUM NON NOCERE (FIRST DO NO HARM)
Hippocrates, the first physician, believed a patient should not be
made worse by the doctor’s treatments. Naturopathy uses mostly
natural, non-toxic medicines and relatively non-invasive therapies
to minimize side effects.
TOLLE TOTUM (TREAT THE WHOLE PERSON)
A person’s body is not just the sum of symptomatic parts or separate
from their mind or spirit. Every person is a unique individual and
the treatment plan should be customized according to each person’s
own unique biochemistry.
TOLLE CAUSUM (TREAT THE ROOT CAUSE)
Naturopathic Physicians seek the cause behind the cause of a
disease. Rather than just treating the symptoms, the Naturopath
desires to see a permanent recovery without dependence on palliative
medicine.
PREVENIO (PREVENTION)
Prevention is the best cure. Adopting healthful habits now will
deter disease and maximize the benefits out of life today and for
the future to come.
VIS MEDICATRIX NATURAE (THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE)
Based on a tradition of healing known as Vitalism, utilizing the
Healing Spirit of Nature. Our body has an inherent knowingness to
heal and a desire to maintain homeostasis (balance and wellness).
Naturopathic medicine focuses on strengthening this Vital Force by
working with the body’s natural rhythm so the body may heal itself.
DOCERE (DOCTOR AS TEACHER)
Naturopaths educate their patients about health and encourage them
to take an active role in maintaining a healthy state of being. This
empowers patients to be responsible for their own wellness.
